Profile features

The oxidation and reduction that occur in the cambic horizon develop the pattern of
mottling of iron and manganese compound, as referring to the term gleyic properties. A sulfuric,

cambic, duric, calcic, or gypsic horizon also may be found in the subsoil. Generally, Gleysols are
            medium to fine-textured.

            Environment and landforms

Gleysols typically occur in low positions on the landscape where the level of
groundwater or seawater is shallow, including those areas as influenced by tidal, shallow lakes,
            and seashores.

            Use and management

Gleysols in the lowland typically have fine textures, poor drainage, and high fertility,
which are suitably used for paddy rice cultivation. For growing arable cropping, vegetable crops,
and horticulture, Gleysols should be drained to suppress the groundwater table, for instance,

groove lifting. For acid sulfate soils, the drained Gleysols should be improved by liming and
amendment materials in combination with fertilizer applications, especially in the areas where
            the problem is severe.
