Profile features

An ochric, mollic, umbric, or histic horizon may characterize the surface soil. Fluvisols
have a high groundwater table and exhibit gleyic properties. In arid regions, these soils may be
calcareous or have a salic horizon.

              Environment and landforms

Fluvisols occur in all climates on almost level areas in low-lying situations, which are

subject to periodic flooding. A wide range of profile features is developed as a result of the
different particle-size and drainage characteristics of the sediments on floodplains, levees, and

              back-swamps.

              Use and management

Fluvisols are typically fertile, occur on flat, and easy to utilize. They are widely used

for paddy rice. Fluvisols on marine sediments are often under mangrove. The presence of
sulfidic soil material or sulfuric horizon limits the potential for agriculture.
