Profile features

Leptosols are shallow soils rich in rock fragments. In some areas, these soils
have dark-coloured, organic-rich, leached surface horizons. Leptosols in weathered calcareous
materials may have a mollic horizon and high microbial activities.

            Environment and landforms

Leptosols occur in all climate conditions. They are most common on steep landscapes,

where the rate of soil formation keeps pace with that of soil erosion.

            Use and management

With a shallow depth, extremely rich in rock fragments,
and steepness of the slope, Leptosols limits their uses, especially for
arable crops. In general, they are best left under natural forest. For
agricultural uses, if needed, Leptosols require a measure of soil and
water conservation to prevent them from soil erosion.
